Baccarat Glossary Terms

The Game of Baccarat

The terms below are to provided to help you understand and enjoy the game of baccarat better, there may be terms we have overlooked however, feel free to contact us with any known omissions or corrections you may like to contribute.

Advantage

This commonly refers to the edge (house edge) a casino has over a player on a given bet.

Baccarat

1) The worst hand a player can have in Baccarat, a total of zero. 2) Also the name of the game which is derived from the Italian word baccara, meaning zero.

Banco

1) The Banker. 2) A term used by a player whose choice is to fade the entire bank bet in chemin de fer.

Banco Prime

A term used when more than one player is calling banco and refers to the privilege of a player to the bank's right to fade the entire bank bet in chemin de fer.

Baccarat En Banque

The game is a variation of chemin de fer (which is played in European casinos), three hands are dealt to the player. Also referred to as deux tableau.

Banker

An option on the table layout in which the customer can bet, does not refer to casino (house) itself.

Bankroll

Refers to the available amount in which the player has to gamble.

Bet

Also referred to as a wager, is used to described the action of a player that places his chips down on a layout option on the baccarat board, either 'Player', 'Banker' or 'Tie'.

Broadway

A container located located in the middle of the layout for the purpose of holding discarded cards.

Burn

To discard a number of cards after the decks have been cut and prior to play beginning.

Caller

A dealer who calls the game of baccarat, also know as a callman or croupier (french).

Casino

A place of business that houses a selection of gambling activities involving licensed games where players can wager on the outcome of the those games for potential profit.

Chemmy

A slang term short for chemin de fer.

Chips

A term for tokens issued by the casino used instead for money.

Chemin de fer

A french term which means "railway" which is another name used by players, you cannot bet on Player or Bank, (Punto or Banco) you must bet on one or the other. The casino does not have any direct involvement in the bets placed as players wager amongst themselves.

Commission

A 5% charge imposed on all winning bank bets.

Cover

A term (also known as fade) that is used when a customer chooses to cover all or part of the bank bet.

Croupier

A french term for the english word dealer.

Crew

A casino term for the employees that staff the games tables at the casino.

Dealer

The dealer is a casino employee that handles all bets and transactions on behalf of the player, also know as a croupier.

Deux Tableau

The game is a variation of chemin de fer (which is played in European casinos), three hands are dealt to the player. Also referred to as Baccarat En Banque.

Discard Tray

A tray located in front of the dealer's area and holds all the cards that have been played or discarded, the "drop box" and the "tip box" are located on either side of the discard tray.

Face Cards

In Baccarat face cards are the king, queen and jack and 10's have a value of zero.

Fade

To fade in chemin de fer, is to cover all of the bank's bet.

Gambling

Is an action a player takes when he risks an amount of money against the casino or game for a desired outcome.

Game

The game of baccarat is played on a table layout with three betting options, "player", "banker" or "tie", the object of the game is the hand closer to 9 wins. Players wager on the games three possible outcomes.

Gaming

Gaming encompasses many different sectors of the casino industry, such as fixed-odds gambling, horse racing, sports betting, casino games and lottery.

High Roller

A term for a player who wagers big money at a casino. Also referred to as a VIP.

House Edge

Refers to the advantage that a casino has over a player.

Layout

Referring to the imprint that shows all bets that can be made in the baccarat game within those areas, ie: 'Player', 'Banker' or 'Tie'.

Marker

A signed credit note or slip, (IOU) in which stipulates money owned by the player for the purpose of continuing or commencing a wager and is held by the casino until the marker is paid.

Mini Baccarat

A scaled down version of Baccarat played on a smaller table and is staffed by one dealer and the pace is much faster. The layout of the table exactly the same, however the betting limits are somewhat smaller.

Natural

If a players initial hand has a total of 8 or 9 this is referred to as a natural. In French the term for a 9 is La Grande and an 8 is La Petite.

North American Baccarat

A variation of baccarat that is played in the U.S., Australia and Canada, also known as Punto Banco, players may bet on the player or the banker.

Odds

Refers to the probability of an event (in baccarat the outcome of a bet on the layout options, 'Player', 'Banker' or 'Tie'.

Palette

A wooden tool used to move cards on the table.

Payoff

(1) Refers to the dealer paying out the player the winnings of bet. (2) The player cashing out his chips with the casino.

Player

An option on the table layout in which the customer can bet, does not refer to customer itself.

Players

A term used to described a person who places bets (gambles) in casino or card room, also referred to as the customer or punto.

Punto Banco

A variation of baccarat that is played in the U.S., Australia and Canada, also known as North American Baccarat, players may bet on the player or the banker.

Railway

Another name used by players for the baccarat variation Chemin de fer (which means railway), you cannot bet on Player or Bank, (Punto or Banco) you must bet on one or the other. The casino does not have any direct involvement in the bets placed as players wager amongst themselves.

Rule Card

Refers to a card in which the rules of play for baccarat and chemin de fer are printed.

Shills

Casino employees, generally young attractive ladies used to lure players to the Baccarat table.

Shoe

A container (wooden box) in which the playing cards are both held and dispensed.

Standoff

A term used for when the banker and the player tie.

Tie

An option on the table layout in which the customer can bet, the customer is wagering that the banker and player options will tie, an outcome that usually pays odds of 9:1.

Wager

Also referred to as a bet is used to described the action of a player that places his chips down on a layout option on the baccarat board, either 'Player', 'Banker' or 'Tie'.
